Hi! My name is Phil and I'm the creator and writer of the OiNK Blog, where I've been reading classic UK comics from my youth in real time. It's proved really popular and has reignited my love of writing. (I'm currently in the planning stages of a book about the OiNK comic itself with one of its editors!) During the past five years I've interviewed everyone from cartoonists to renowned rock photographers, to editors and legendary comics artists. When professionals such as these tell you they enjoy your writing you have to at least try to stop the imposter syndrome, right?
So my next project is going to be based on another love of mine: the Nintendo Game Boy series. From the original machine through the GameBoy Advance, the SP and the Micro I adored the Game Boy. For a while now I've been looking for the perfect subject for an ongoing magazine, but nothing excited me enough. Then, I picked up a bookazine about the history of Nintendo and the second I'd finished the chapter on the Game Boy I was on eBay ordering an original and a bunch of games. Now, it's time to get cracking with my next writing project: Game Boy Format!
Originally I'd thought about setting up its official site here, but seeing as how that would contain a shop to buy issues, this didn't feel like the right place. However, while browsing Neocities and getting all nostalgic about my old Knight Rider Geocities site from the early 2000s, I realised this was the perfect place for a personal spot online, somewhere to chart my new writing career and share my thoughts as I go along. That's what Neocities is all about as far as I'm concerned: Personal websites that are truly personal, free of social media and getting back to what we shared about ourselves in the days of Geocities. I know there are like-minded people here and I'm excited to join in!
Two-plus decades ago I borrowed a book from the library called Teach Yourself HTML in 24 Hours and built my website, and now I've bought a later edition of the same book and am beginning the journey through it all over again. I've decided not to hide away until it's all ready. After all, part of the fun of Neocities (and Geocities before it) is to grow publicly and share that experience with others doing the same thing. So here we are. I'll be chronicling the creation of my next project on this website from scratch. Just announcing it publicly is kind of a big deal, only a few friends have known about it before now.
